Vincent VanGogh is among one of the most famous and influential artist in history. He was born in the Netherlands in 1853, he died at the age of 37 in 1890. He sold only one painting during his lifetime, his paintings now sell for millions. Van Gogh's early work was dark and gloomy, he started adding color into his paintings when he saw some very colorful Japanese artworks. We know some much about Van Gogh because was always writing letters to his younger brother, Theo. He applied the paint very thick and straight from the tube, his quick short strokes create a feeling of movement within his work.
After studying Van Gogh we watched an interview of Pinckney graduate (1983) Robert Sabuda, famous pup-up artist. He discovered pop-up books while visiting the dentist, he began creating pop-up artwork shortly after that visit. Learn more about Robert at his website robertsabuda.com.
After the students completed their Van Gogh paintings, they were introduced to Robert Sabuda. The students compared and contrasted the two artists. We finished the assignment with a "walking field trip" to Pathfinder School to see a painting done by Sabuda when Pathinder was the High School.
